Sparkle and Fade: Confetti System brings the Fiesta
by Daria Radlinski
If you’ve stopped by our Howard Street store lately, then there’s no doubt you’ve noticed the metallic piñatas floating around our Rodarte-clad party of one in the window. The method behind the madness is complements of CONFETTI SYSTEM, the Brooklyn-based duo who have brought the party everywhere from United Bamboo’s spring 2009 campaign to Karen O’s birthday party to music videos by Michel Gondry for Beck and Kanye West. As citizens of the world, we figured there was no better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than to let the System dazzle our abode.
The elements are simple enough - cardboard, tissue paper, and silk among others – but it’s the hands of the artists, Nicholas Anderson and Julie Ho, who turn these materials into sophisticated party play things. Beyond piñatas, Confetti System also creates necklaces made of twisted and knotted silk, as well as silk and leather blindfolds. All of their wares propose a collaborative process. Beautiful on their own, when the blindfold is tied and the piñata bursts into a ticker tape parade of metallics, the items come together to create a moment that’s at once tangible and fleeting. As Julie Ho tells the NEW YORK TIMESin their recent feature, obliterating these glittering orbs is the best part.
The Confetti System installation at Opening Ceremony New York is on view throughout the month of May.
